DESCRIPTION OF THE ESTATE
Situated on the left side of the Sieve River
at an altitude of 300 to 400 meters, Fattoria di Caiano has an excellent
exposure to the sun at midday. The villa was once under the domain of
the Conti Guidi and has been restored and enlarged several times since
the 1600's. The Gancia family restored and enlarged outer areas around
the villa in 1967, including additions to the wine producing areas. Besides
four vineyards Fattoria di Caiano also has 25 hectacres of olive trees,
5 hectacres of peach orchards, 4 hectacres of American black walnut trees
and 160 hectacres of wooded forests.
HISTORY OF THE ESTATE AND ITS PEOPLE
From medieval times Fattoria di Caiano was
connected by a gallery to strategically located Castle San Leolino owned
by the Conti Guidi. In later years names of noble Florentine families
appear in its history Passerini, Rilli-Orsini, Gallo-Tassi, until after
World War II when Fattoria di Caiano was purchased by Silvio Gancia who
planted vines and organized the wine cellars. In 1983 Joseph T.Zingale,
an American of Italian descent, and an avid collector of fine wines decided
to become a wine producer and began a search for a vineyard capable of
producing high quality wines to meet his tastes. From the first moment
he saw the villa and its facilities he decided to buy it. The beauty of
its location, the history and the character of the villa, and the wine
producing facilities were exactly what he was looking for.He elevated
the quality of the wine production and each summer remains at the villa
to personally oversee the work and harvest of the grapes.
