DESCRIPTION OF THE ESTATE
The locality of Travignoli is mentioned in
a Vallombrosa parchment dated November 28th 1100. The origin of the name
clearly indicates that already in ancient times vines were cultivated
here. The Azienda Agricola Travignoli consists of 60 ha of vineyard, 24
ha of olive-groves and 5 ha of woodland. The vines are planted on calcareous,
marly and clayey soil, with southern exposure, at an altitude of between
250-400 m. above sea level. In addition to the typical Chianti vines,
Cabernet, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot are also cultivated. The ancient
vat room today houses large stainless steel vats, whilst the oak barrels
are located in the aging cellar, built underneath the farm, in one of
the oldest parts of the villa.
HISTORY OF THE ESTATE AND ITS PEOPLE
In 1473, the "Casa da Signore" (The Lord's
House) of Travignoli, was left by Aloisia Lotti to the Florentine Santa
Maria Nuova Hospital, which turned it into a farm. In 1607, a description
by the Hospital Rector, Barnaba degli Oddi, mentioned that the farm buildings
included two oil-mills, granaries and huge cellars, in addition to the
rooms reserved for the Superiors when they stayed there. At the end of
the 17th century, the estate consisted of 14 holdings and the villa, and
although of a prevalently agricultural nature, it was now considerably
enlarged. In the 18th century, it was purchased by the Cuccoli Fiaschi
family and, through the marriage of Sofia Cuccoli Fiaschi to Count Francesco
Busi, it passed to the latter family, which owns the estate today.
BIOGRAPHY OF THE OWNER
Travignoli, "Casa da Signore" and a Farm Estate
already back in 1029, the estate was added to the patrimony of the Busi
family in the XIXth century, as part of the dowry of Sofia Cuccoli Fiaschi,
the bride of Francesco Busi, and a descendent of the Count Cattani family
who were confirmed as owners of Pelago Castle and the surrounding land,
in a "Brief" by Pope Eugene IV, in 1445.
